Mamma Roma

An opera built around a large square table that slowly turns into a tomb. At the CETC of the Teatro Colón — an underground nave ringed with side chapels — the audience faces itself across the central space: Ettore's death restages Mantegna's Lamentation over the Dead Christ, quoted by Pasolini in the film. The whole device is purely acoustic, without amplification: three percussionists operate the table's mechanisms in full view, operators of a sacrifice in which banquet, ceremony and death become one and the same.
